"Can't Read the Digital Readout" 2010-01-16
By Steamboat (Pennsylvania)
The digital readout shorted out right after the warranty. Everything gets microwaved one minute at a time. Cannot see what time it is or know how much time is left until things are done. Sharp provided no assistance. The circuit board costs over $200 plus labor to fix. We have been "microwaving blind" ever since. Will not buy from them again.

"From Sharp Minds come Dangerous Products!" 2009-09-23
By Michael B. Kinder
Please note this review specifically relates to the R-2110JW model. However it may influence your decision making.

The Sharp "smart Carousel" design uses rotating magnetrons below the surface of the cooking chamber instead of rotating the food on a carousel. The rotating mechanism under the cooking chamber malfunctioned. As a result arcing occurred between the parts causing a fire and smoke. The unit was turned off in time to avoid a fire spreading to the surrounding cabinets. If no one had been present in the kitchen at the time a serious fire could have occurred.

The defect was bad enough. I consider myself lucky the damage was only to the microwave. Dealing with Sharp customer service was even worse. It has taken over two months to resolve this problem. Sharp offered me a replacement but couldn't get a new unit in white. We suggested paying the difference for an upgrade. We paid the difference for the upgrade...the sharp couldn't find it in white...even though I was able to locate a unit in white in about 5 minutes online. After giving up on a replacement and requesting a refund they "generously" offered me $183 for a product I paid $262. A product that endangered my home and family and had left me without a microwave for two months.

I've enjoyed Sharp products in the past but after this incident I can not recommend doing business with them under any circumstances.

By A. Ciraulo (MA USA)
There are not many choices for "over-the-counter" models out there, I wanted to see reviews of other models because I have to replace this Sharp model which is finicky at best! When it is working, the "Compu Cook" is so complicated I have to pull out the manual. But a more serious problem is that the microwave turns on all by itself, so we have to keep a bowl of water in it to avoid a major catastrophe, and occasionally the appliance blows a fuse, I noticed another reviewer had the same problem with the fuse as well.

We bought this product about 14 months ago and installed it in our newly renovated kitchen about 10 months ago. When the microwave works, it's a good microwave -- works well, good looking, nice automatic sensors -- however, we've had some problems with it.

The big problem for us (and this is a big problem) is that in the 10 months we've had it one of the three internal fuses shorted out on 3 different occasions. Now that it's out of it's 1-year warranty the price of fixing that fuse looks like its >$100. Also, this microwave is going to be tough to replace becasue we've built the cabinet opening custom for this microwave.

I'm also going to complain to my kitchen designer and make sure that this appliance isn't going to be recommended to his other customers. Unreliable quality makes for an expensive appliance.

 "A good mid-sized microwave" 2010-04-12
By Troy (Minnesota, USA)
Pros:

-Has an inverter

-Good amount of power (1300 watts) for its size

-Moisture sensor for auto-reheat/auto-cook

-Aesthetically, I like the colors and look of the microwave

Cons:

-Time display is difficult to see at sharp to semi-sharp angles (although, I don't think it's a big deal)

-I think that no light comes on in the microwave when it's open (again, not really a big deal for myself, since I usually have the kitchen light on, and if I really want to see the item I'm microwaving, I always have just taken the item out of the microwave for inspection, anyway)

Overall, I really like this microwave, especially how powerful it is, which is not always easy to find in mid-sized microwaves. Also, it's not extremely easy to find an inverter in a mid-sized microwave, either.

"Microwave oven that fits the space" 2010-02-04

We had a space constructed specifically for the microwave oven to fit in our kitchen. Finally the old unit died and the challange became finding an oven with the correct geometry. Using AMAZON, the search was simple, the approprate oven was selected and the popcorn was again flowing in our home. The shipping was exactly as promised. Plug it in and all was well.

"Died after just a few months" 2009-12-01
By Muneraven (Saint Paul, MN United States)
Don't buy a Panasonic microwave! If you look at online reviews you will see the same thing over and over: Panasonic microwaves don't last. In my case we had this piece of crap less than six months and suddenly the infamous "H98" code showed up and that was it . . .no more microwave.

Google "Panasonic H98" and you will see a lot of poor, puzzled people going to websites to try to find out why their almost new microwaves stopped working.

I have no respect for a company that has widespread failures of their products and just keeps selling them. Any company can get defective parts or have deisgn flaws, but good companies do recalls and have good customer service so they can make things right for consumers. Panasonic just keeps selling their crappy microwaves and they don't care if they don't last.

 "A potent microwave" 2009-07-10
By Hal Miller (Catharpin, VA USA)
I don't know what wattage this one replaced, but it heats food noticeably faster, and a good deal more consistently than our last one.

Having used it for a month now, I like the spinner to select time. I thought I'd prefer digital entry, but the spinner is pretty responsive to how fast you turn it.

 "died after 3 months" 2009-06-16
By Tarun Upadhyay (Great Falls, VA USA)
I had bad experience with this oven. Only after a couple of months of gentle use - it shuts down after 10 seconds of use !!

If you search, you will see many other similar Panasonic models have similar issues:

* The oven will shut down after a few seconds of use

* or the oven will reset

* or the lights on the control panel will behave erratically.

When I called the service number, they asked me to reset the oven by taking off the electric supply for an hour - which helped for a few days but then oven went back to 10 second shut off.

I think there is a software issue with this type of Panasonic models and I will suggest people to stay away from them.

It meets all expectations, it may sound funny but the popcorn button truly does work to the last kernel. I would recommend it to anyone. The design is very sleek looking and we know there is still a lot more to explore with what it can do.

"Food in the unit before you choose preheat convection" 2010-01-09
By J. Quinlan (United States)
Great idea I went out and got frozen french fries.

Tried no preheat convection and after 15 minutes they weren't done and cooked another 5 minutes.

Another batch I went with preheat and the temp at 425 as suggested and put the fries in the oven at the start of the preheat cycle. By the time it hit 425 the fries were done. I never did set the time. You are not allowed to set the time before the temp preheat is reached. At that rate if they are not quite done then you add more time through what they call kitchen time.

there's heat exhausting out the back that I wish would stay in the oven heating it up faster. However I don't know how convection ovens heat themselves.

Tried the idea of turning on the grill for 2 minutes then going to convection. It did not seem to speed things up any.

I am not unhappy. I've gotten three appliances off my counter and put the Cuisinart on top of the stove. Heat is an issue in the southwest so I have never used my gas pilot stove.

The microwave works exactly as I expected.

The grill has three settings. 100% grilling, 30% micro plus 70% grill, and 55% micro plus 45% grill. I haven't enjoyed steak at home for years so this I am really looking forward to. Fishsticks I'm going to try 30/70.

Roasting and baking have a fast setting which combines micro and convection, you can go straight convection too.

I would buy it again because the price is right, it microwaves great and grills. I never was an oven baker so few times I may preheat convection will be very seldom.

Right now I'm going to look for a rack utensil that I can use in both oven and microwave.

I'm sure after a learning curve that I will be preheat convection cooking and adding minutes after the oven acquires the set temp to finish my cooking.

Everything is possible.

 "Expensive Microwave" 2009-10-15
By Grover C. Strickler
I own one

It is an ok as as a 100 dollar microwave,

As a oven it will take forever to get to a desired temperature 45 minutes+,

mine has never got above 375, and after an hour or so I am usually done.

If you want something that will do it all, this will do it.

However I wanted something that would do it faster (baking/broiling)

and given the forever preheat time this does not cut it.

"The Best Convection/Microwave Ever Made" 2010-03-18
By Atlanta DVD Lover (Atlanta, GA)
I plugged in the unit as soon as it arrived and set it up, which took no time at all. Yes, the way you press buttons and set the time and temperature is different from what you are used to, but trust me, it's a transition you will make without any trouble. I like the fact that the convection baking temperature stays displayed during the entire time you are cooking something with the convection feature. You will begin to love turning the dial for the cooking time rather than pressing individual buttons. This way if you make a mistake with the time, you can turn the dial forward or backwards instead of having to press clear and start all over re-entering the cooking time. The unit is programmed with intelligence which will make lighted rings blink around the dials to let you know which dial must be turned to achieve cooking. And talk about quiet. My Sharp Carousel was rather loud when I used the convection feature. The fan sounded almost as loud as a vent over a stove. Not so with this oven. I almost thought it wasn't working. It works well it's just much quieter. The only regret you will have with this oven is not owning one sooner. BUY IT NOW!

"Great microwave for the first 9 months" 2010-01-22
By F. A. List (Oak Ridge, TN)
The oven was purchased in Jan. 2008 and worked fine for the first nine months. Then the heating power began to stop when the oven was used continuously for more than about ten minutes. This problem gradually became more frequent and severe, so the oven was taken to a shop for repair before the 1-year warranty expired.

First, the magnetron tube was replaced, the oven was returned, and the problem remained. Next, the control board and the magnetron tube (again) were replaced. The oven worked for about one month, and then the problem returned with a vengeance. The oven could not heat a cup of water without the heating power stopping.

At this point, the repair shop contacted the Panasonic distributor and requested that the oven be declared a "lemon" and replaced with a new oven. The distributor denied the request, and so the repair shop replaced the inverter board, the control board, and the magnetron tube (again!). The shop had to back-date the repair several weeks to fall within the 1-year warranty.

After three magnetron tubes, two control boards, and one inverter board, the oven worked flawlessly from Feb. 2009 to Jan. 2010. Then again the problem returned. The oven is now going to the landfill. I don't have the time to nurse a faulty design. I guess "Made in Japan" doesn't always mean made right.

"Why $540.00 and even more at else where?" 2010-01-05
By just me
I'm going to tell you why it is the most expensive but not too much on detail how it works, I haven't had a chance to use it for a long length of time to make a honest comment. However, with the inverter tech and and the quality of this product I'll expect it to outperform all others.

Why so expensive? It's made in JAPAN. "MADE IN JAPAN" stamped on the box and inside the door panel of the Microwave oven. I'm sure if it was made in China, Malaysia or Korea then it would be more likely in the $375 range. I have to say, It is very rare these days to get something to be made right and that is in the USA/Germany/Japan and most time even your money you want to spend can't get the Manufacture to do it because of business cost and margin. Everything is from cheap China resulting manufactures with greater margins. We all have to settle for a sort of lesser standard. Now isn't that true? Don't get me wrong. I am not rich, I make just enough to get by, $32,000 a year.

I went to Sears to see the Kenmore and I saw a GE there too. I Previously seen a Sharp and but never seen a Panasonic in person but only had read and saw pictures about it on the web, (I'm talking about con-mic-ovens.) The model I saw in person (all except the panasonic) were made in China, Korea and maybe Malaysia. Now that my panasonic con/mic-oven arrived, I can now see it is the best of quality of them all as far as workmanship and material used.

I had a chance to see the panasonic microwave oven (not convection micro) at sam's club, it was the most fancy model from panasonic, stainless steel with the knob and blue lights. And that was made in China as I eagerly look for where it's made. It was price for about $197 for giant 2.2 cu microwave stainless steel microwave. Well Made in china, so that is why so cheap, under $200. Since that fine microwave is made in China I thought this con-mic-oven must come from China too. I was surprised to find out it made in Japan.

So that is why it cost over $500 and the other brands cost about $350-$425.

Don't get me wrong again, I like china stuff too but not all of china stuff. For example, I like Apple Macintosh Computers and all of that is from China, not made in Cupertino , CA anymore. I like China made firecrackers and rockets and had some to play with this New Years day, they were the best and no duds. And I like Chinese food too and I have to say it is most of the time it's cheaper than other cuisine and tastier too.

any way thanks for reading. Just spend the money and buy it. I know you're reading because you're thinking about buying it.

 "broke after two years...." 2009-11-30
By Agrineer (Gainesville, FL USA)
This is a top-of-the-line microwave and It has served us well for over two years of normal family use, both for microwave as well as for convection oven cooking. Yesterday it greeted us in the morning with a distinct electronics-burnt smell when warming up milk... Our previous microwave /convection oven combination lasted for almost 10 years... Most disappointing from an expensive and supposedly reliable product like this... We are now looking into fixing it but keep this in mind when shedding big bucks for this item...

 "Buyer Beware" 2009-09-19
By Michael J. Russo (Bayville)
Bought this unit Feb.20,2008, worked great until April 19,2009. Amplifier died cost me $150.

May 29,2009 Smoke and sparks everywhere. Called Panasonic. "Send us the unit we want to look at it." once they had it I couldn't get it back. "We'll replace it!" but not with the same unit I sent them but a lesser one. Now I'm out $750 and I have an unopened box I do not want and can't get hold of Silivia Ramirez in Coustomer Claims Dept. they don't return my calls.

Bait and switch Con Game. Magnatron has Multiyear warranty they are not honoring.
