I love this compact unit. Got a great price at bed bath and beyond (sorry ). The white trim fits into my kitchen (just got rid of a large black unit). Since I do not need great power for all my meals and other items, this one is perfect.

I use the microwave primarily to pop microwave pop corn. While the microwave was able to warm up food (albeit a little slow), it wasn't able to pop my popcorn. It could just be my microwave. However, I would suggest testing with a bag of popcorn before you throw away the box.

 "A great little microwave" 2009-08-22
By Melissa Kaler (Saint Augustine, Florida United States)
Great product - perfect for a college dorm or for small spaces. Works like a charm - heats up water fast within a minute. I used to have a cuisinart microwave and it was always frustrating that it didn't heat up fast enough. But this new one works great.

"No delay start option; primitive power selection mode" 2009-02-03
By E. M. Krauss (New York, NY USA)
Microwave heats well but features are primitive...there is no delay start option, even though the display panel has a timer label; this is apparently decorative, and does nothing, as confirmed by reviewing the manual and contacting the company. Also, selecting power level must be done by repeatedly pressing the power button to count down from 10, rather than using the number keypad, as on earlier models. This was disappointing. Buyers should download the manual and read it before purchasing this unit.

 "Good for the price." 2007-08-31
By R. Miller (Georgia)
This microwave shipped quickly, and although I was worried about damage in shipping, it arrived fine. In use, it has a rotating plate inside that is a little jerky and makes little bumping noises as it rotates when in use. I had a Wal-Mart one in the past that did the same thing. It is a little annoying, but I guess it gets the job done.

 "worth the gamble" 2010-03-15
By J. Falkenberg
The microwave isn't as powerful as I'd like but it gets the job done. It just takes a little more time. The convection feature was ready in ten minutes and works great. I read the negative reviews about people getting lemon ovens and leaving them at a repair shop forever, but I decided it was a great price and worth the gamble. It sounds louder at lower power settings, and the turntable makes a racket sometimes, both of which are mentioned in the handbook and are no cause for concern.

"Nice, but not a work horse" 2010-03-09
By Pierce H. Thompson (Erwinna, PA)
We have owned our Sanyo Microwave Oven with convection and grill for almost two months, and have attempted to test all functions in order to write a complete review. We rely heavily on reviews to help us decide what to buy, so we did our best to evaluate this oven. At almost $180.00 it is not a trivial purchase.

The design is sleek, and the controls easy to use -- but as other reviewers cautioned, keep the booklet handy!

The microwave functions -- cook, auto menu cooking (limited to microwave), auto reheat all work as well as our last microwave -- a G/E over the range.

However, the conbined functions -- micro plus grill, convection plus grill, leave much to be desired.

The roast chicken function -- a combination of micro and grilling is neat and works well -- but does not save time, although it probably saves energy and kitchen heat compared to cooking chicken in a standard oven. When the chicken was taste-tested our family concluded that it was pretty good chicken and assumed that the time to cook was materially reduced -- which it was not. It was agreed that in a "time-bind" they would eat this chicken, but preferred standard oven baked. Given that the chicken took about ten minutes longer than it would have in the oven, the saving was a hot kitchen in the summer, and probably many BTUs.

Combo 1(Micro and Convection) works well -- but it is not fast! Nor are there timing guides. (More on this later)

We have not used Combo 2 (Microwave and Grill) for anything but hot dogs. Too slow by half! Steak is a treat for us, so we cook it with much ceremony outside -- but my experience with grilling hot dogs fo lunch caused me to turn on the broiler in our "real"stove to finish them.

Combo 4 (grill and convection) is rather a joke. Today, in anticipation of putting our review on paper, I took two defrosted quarter pound hamburgs and put them on the grill rack. Dialed in 20 minutes on Combo 4 and walked away. At 20 minutes, the hamburgs registered about 100 degrees F. internal -- as in not cooked. I added another 5 minutes and temped them and got to 120 degrees. Another 6 minutes got them to an edible internal temperature of 140. Thirty minutes to "grill?" two hamburgers?

The convection function alone works well for small quantities of food. But, it is important to note that this is not a convection oven -- in other words an oven that cooks more rapidly than a "standard" oven.

So, what is this neat little oven good for? As a micro it's great. In the same space as a micro you can heat dinner rolls on convection when your main oven is tied up, or bake appetizers while the roast is roasting in the main oven.

What's missing? A recipe book would have helped. The first time I cooked hamburgs using Combo 4 I figured they would cook faster than the time to heat my T-Fal Compact Multi-Grill (rather a waste for two burgers!) and I was dead wrong! (The reason for today's test.) If there had been a booklet or time sheet that indicated 30 minutes to cook two thawed burgers -- well T-Fal would have had the whole job rather than finishing it up!

For people who live in dorm rooms (I was once one of those!) who want all the functions of an oven and a micro in one box -- I would have been glad to have this Sanyo. But -- a recipe book that might indicate time to cook various things -- would really help.

Are we glad we bought this oven? Well, yes. But, and this is important, it is not a Micro/Convection Oven -- nor does it claim to be one.

This oven is a great microwave -- we are very happy with the micro functions. It is also a nice "auxilliary" oven for entertaining -- as long as you can work out the times. It probably saves energy over heating up our main gas oven for small things and will likely keep heat out of our kitchen in the summer.

 "Horrible, stay away." 2010-01-18
By Y. Erez (New York)
I read all the reviews on this page and blindly clicked that "buy now" button without putting too much thought into it, and I had to come back here and warn you guys. This is a COMPLETE waist of money. I can only assume the other 5 star reviews are fake and written by the manufacturer / stores because this thing BARELY functions as any of the mentioned utilities.

THE MICROWAVE

This is the less defective feature on this device. The microwave works ok, but with the most confusing, unintuitive controls ever (just look at the picture of the controls and see if you can figure it out). The microwave work, but I didn't find a way to change it's power settings, and accessing all the preset programs is a pain every time you do it.

THE OVEN

This is the WORST part of this device, and you can clearly see that this is not a functioning oven simply because THERE IS NO TEMPERATURE CONTROL. What kind of oven doesn't have temperature control? And after 2 months in use, the grill bars are rusty and whenever I try to use them they smoke up the entire room

PLEASE do yourselves a favor and get a separate toaster oven / microwave. I made the mistake of combining them and now I'm paying for it :(

"The Good, Bad, and not so Ugly" 2009-12-19
By William Mills (Los Angeles, Ca)
Simply put, the price makes this product choice one, regardless of the minor flaws. If, that is, one must have a combination microwave/convection oven, and works for a living. I had hoped to chuck my old convection oven and circa 1990 microwave. Mission accomplished on the old convection oven, but the old microwave is still around. Why? Well, the Sanyo Microwave was simply not as powerful, and more importantly one must remove the rack from the Sanyo to microwave. It was easier just to throw stuff in the old microwave then rotate out the rack. Which brings me to my convection issue, the oven is not as powerful as my old one and the space is significantly smaller, no more pizzas, unless they are mini ones.

So the good is the ability of less picky individuals to rotate out the rack, and accept the weaker power of the microwave/oven. In doing so they acquire a combo unit and can ditch the old products. The bad is the smaller size, annoyingly small oven rack, and popcorn that even at full power takes 3.30 minutes. Less important is that the minute setting function and other options can only be accessed with the door open. This is annoying as well. Just put all the damn commands on the outside so I don't have to open the door,Sanyo. Finally, the unit is not bad looking and matches my silver themed kitchen.

So for us working class folks this is the unit of choice. If you are affluent, and shop Amazon then drop five bills you cheap thug and buy the name brand, larger, more powerful, and classier unit.

"A good alternative to having multiple machines" 2009-12-09
By FRMEADOWS (New York, USA)
I bought this product because we did not have the space for both a microwave and a toaster oven/convection oven. We have two young kids and making things quick is what we needed. While the grill feature does not do the best job of really "grilling" like a grill would, it does heat up hot dogs better than the microwave feature does AND I can "grill" bread and get it toasted. The convection part has worked out fine, though probably not as good as a full sized oven. BUT, it is perfect for small items.

The controls are different because it uses a dial to control some features like time and such. I will not say that is better or worse than button controls, just different.

I am glad we purchased this product because it has made making meals easier especially defrosting meats, bagels, etc.

I needed a small microwave as I am living in a little place so you have to be creative with space. I've had the microwave for a couple of months and have not had any problems - I've jut really used it to heat up leftovers and frozen veggies, rice. Seems to work pretty quick and heats evenly. I would recommend it.

DO NOT buy this microwave. I have one because I have a small apartment in NY City and it is the pits. It can't even pop microwave popcorn. It only manages to pop about 50% of the kernels in the bag before scorching, and I've tried every brand of microwave popcorn known to man until I finally realized it was this stupid microwave. Do yourself a favor and get a different brand.

I believe this is a mistake from Amazon as it says nothing about grill on the package it arrived in. Since it is almost impossible to change things via Amazon I have kept it and it works fine.
