"The Best Convection/Microwave Ever Made" 2010-03-18
By Atlanta DVD Lover (Atlanta, GA)
I plugged in the unit as soon as it arrived and set it up, which took no time at all. Yes, the way you press buttons and set the time and temperature is different from what you are used to, but trust me, it's a transition you will make without any trouble. I like the fact that the convection baking temperature stays displayed during the entire time you are cooking something with the convection feature. You will begin to love turning the dial for the cooking time rather than pressing individual buttons. This way if you make a mistake with the time, you can turn the dial forward or backwards instead of having to press clear and start all over re-entering the cooking time. The unit is programmed with intelligence which will make lighted rings blink around the dials to let you know which dial must be turned to achieve cooking. And talk about quiet. My Sharp Carousel was rather loud when I used the convection feature. The fan sounded almost as loud as a vent over a stove. Not so with this oven. I almost thought it wasn't working. It works well it's just much quieter. The only regret you will have with this oven is not owning one sooner. BUY IT NOW!

"Great microwave for the first 9 months" 2010-01-22
By F. A. List (Oak Ridge, TN)
The oven was purchased in Jan. 2008 and worked fine for the first nine months. Then the heating power began to stop when the oven was used continuously for more than about ten minutes. This problem gradually became more frequent and severe, so the oven was taken to a shop for repair before the 1-year warranty expired.

First, the magnetron tube was replaced, the oven was returned, and the problem remained. Next, the control board and the magnetron tube (again) were replaced. The oven worked for about one month, and then the problem returned with a vengeance. The oven could not heat a cup of water without the heating power stopping.

At this point, the repair shop contacted the Panasonic distributor and requested that the oven be declared a "lemon" and replaced with a new oven. The distributor denied the request, and so the repair shop replaced the inverter board, the control board, and the magnetron tube (again!). The shop had to back-date the repair several weeks to fall within the 1-year warranty.

After three magnetron tubes, two control boards, and one inverter board, the oven worked flawlessly from Feb. 2009 to Jan. 2010. Then again the problem returned. The oven is now going to the landfill. I don't have the time to nurse a faulty design. I guess "Made in Japan" doesn't always mean made right.

"Why $540.00 and even more at else where?" 2010-01-05
By just me
I'm going to tell you why it is the most expensive but not too much on detail how it works, I haven't had a chance to use it for a long length of time to make a honest comment. However, with the inverter tech and and the quality of this product I'll expect it to outperform all others.

Why so expensive? It's made in JAPAN. "MADE IN JAPAN" stamped on the box and inside the door panel of the Microwave oven. I'm sure if it was made in China, Malaysia or Korea then it would be more likely in the $375 range. I have to say, It is very rare these days to get something to be made right and that is in the USA/Germany/Japan and most time even your money you want to spend can't get the Manufacture to do it because of business cost and margin. Everything is from cheap China resulting manufactures with greater margins. We all have to settle for a sort of lesser standard. Now isn't that true? Don't get me wrong. I am not rich, I make just enough to get by, $32,000 a year.

I went to Sears to see the Kenmore and I saw a GE there too. I Previously seen a Sharp and but never seen a Panasonic in person but only had read and saw pictures about it on the web, (I'm talking about con-mic-ovens.) The model I saw in person (all except the panasonic) were made in China, Korea and maybe Malaysia. Now that my panasonic con/mic-oven arrived, I can now see it is the best of quality of them all as far as workmanship and material used.

I had a chance to see the panasonic microwave oven (not convection micro) at sam's club, it was the most fancy model from panasonic, stainless steel with the knob and blue lights. And that was made in China as I eagerly look for where it's made. It was price for about $197 for giant 2.2 cu microwave stainless steel microwave. Well Made in china, so that is why so cheap, under $200. Since that fine microwave is made in China I thought this con-mic-oven must come from China too. I was surprised to find out it made in Japan.

So that is why it cost over $500 and the other brands cost about $350-$425.

Don't get me wrong again, I like china stuff too but not all of china stuff. For example, I like Apple Macintosh Computers and all of that is from China, not made in Cupertino , CA anymore. I like China made firecrackers and rockets and had some to play with this New Years day, they were the best and no duds. And I like Chinese food too and I have to say it is most of the time it's cheaper than other cuisine and tastier too.

any way thanks for reading. Just spend the money and buy it. I know you're reading because you're thinking about buying it.

"Unreadable Display but Otherwise Excellent" 2010-02-04
By Richard Wimpress (Houston, Texas)
Overall this is an excellent microwave, but with a few caveats:

1) I had read other reviews regarding the unreadability of the display on this and similar Panasonic microwaves, but didn't fully appreciate the problem until it was set up on my counter top. The display is unreadable above 45 degrees from the horizontal, which means that at arm's length to operate the controls, you must bend over to see the display. My solution, which was to build a stand to raise the top of the microwave up to the bottom of the cabinets, made the display high enough to be (barely) readable while standing up, but is probably not acceptable to a lot of people. Panasonic should have caught this in testing and provided a flip-up display that could be adjusted to the installation.

2) Also as mentioned in some of the other reviews, the door release button requires so much force (at least when new) that the unit will skid across the counter-top unless you hold it with your other hand. Mine is mounted in the corner, where it has some stability, but it is still marginal.

3) This unit replaced a Panasonic in which the touch-pad controls died, and the buttons here are indeed logical and have a good solid feel to them. It does take some time to learn programming without a touch-pad, but that shouldn't be an overall issue in your decision.

4) Panasonic could do themselves a favor by better explaining the benefits of the terms Turbo, Inverter, and Sensor, as this microwave indeed performs very, very well after you get over some of the other problems.

 "Just a Couple Flaws" 2010-01-26
By Franz Metcalf (Los Angeles, CA United States)
Four pluses, two minuses.

First, this is a seriously powerful oven. Second, it looks almost elegant--especially for a microwave. Third, the Panasonic inverter technology definitely helps in thawing evenly. For me, this practically eliminates all microwaves but Panasonics from consideration. Fourth, I like the dial.

Okay, now for the troublesome issues. First, as others have remarked for this and similar Panasonics: what on earth were the designers thinking with the awful display? Standing at normal height, you cannot read the display when you are close to the oven. Like, oh, say, when you are trying to USE it. I say I love the dial, but to use the dial to set a time, I need to bend over to counter height. That is simply astoundingly bad design. My five foot two wife has the same problem. Looks great from across the room, though. Second, so far when I've used the reheat sensor it has heated up my soup and tea until it is boiling. Perhaps this is operator error, but I'm not *that* dim a bulb. If I find the error of my ways I'll revise this review.

Still in all, a solid feeling product that does the job with a bit of style.

 "Heats quick" 2009-12-09
By D. Ballard
We bought this during a kitchen remodel to replace an amana over range unit as we installed a range hood.

It seems to have plenty of power and heats everything very fast and evenly. We really don't use the microwave for much more than reheating coffee and leftovers. So far it is working very well for that. Will probably need to refer to the manual for instructions on thawing frozen items as Panasonic says it is unique in the power delivery for that purpose. My only complaint so far is that it is not real intuitive in use and the door button works ok, but is not very smooth. Make sure you have plenty of juice on the circuit you plug it into as it pulls over 12 amps on high. Overall very satisfied.

Light does not turn on when the door is opened

Time input is hard to enter

Sound cannot be turned off

Sensor cooking and Inverter technology is good but they have completely messed up the basic design of the microwave.

"Very happy with this oven" 2010-02-10
By J. J. Ortega
We purchased this model because (1) the NN-SD797S is powerful and has a spacious interior, (2) it got a top rating from Consumer Reports, (3) the Amazon price was very competitive and (4) our previous Panasonic had lasted 15 years! It has not disappointed. We use it for all the standard tasks: heating frozen foods, cooking vegetables, reheating dishes, making popcorn, etc. The oven heats food quickly, evenly and the interior will accommodate a medium-sized casserole dish. It is easy to clean inside and out--and the stainless steel exterior looks good. Oven controls are easy to understand and operate, and they feel solid. The "sensor" heating/reheating feature tends to overcook food for my taste, so I quit using it. This is my only real criticism. We've had it for 1 1/2 months and are very satisfied.

 "Works great, looks great" 2009-12-30
By Mama Mitch (Kent, WA)
We purchased this microwave to replace a 5-year-old Panasonic that was performing beautifully until our 15-year-old had a mental lapse and decided to reheat coffee in a stainless steel and plastic travel mug. The ensuing flames scorched the micro's interior pretty badly and made us fearful that there was electronic damage, so we decided to replace the unit. We had been very happy with our previous Panasonic but were open-minded about switching brands if there was something better out there now that would fit our cabinet (our micro is below the countertop on our kitchen island). We did quite a bit of research and couldn't find any other microwave of this size that got better ratings and reviews, so we ordered ths one. So far we've used it for basic reheating, popcorn, defrosting, and cooking both fresh and frozen veggies -- it works great for everything. Like the old Panasonic, this turntable can handle a 9x13 Pyrex dish. The family likes the dial control and had no problem adjusting to it; Mom is having to adjust to the new Sensor Cook settings (accessed via the dial instead of labelled touchpad buttons) but otherwise is very happy with the performance and looks of the unit. The dial and brushed stainless control key area show fewer fingerprints than the previous touchpad did. The door mechanism feels solid, unlike a number of the micros we looked at in the stores. Bonus for us was that the old trim kit fit the new micro!

 "There's a problem with this thing." 2009-11-13
By William Carson (Key Largo FL)
You have to bend over to read the LCD. If you're like me and are around 5'10" and you put this on a standard hight counter, you will not be able to read the LCD display and tern the dial at the same time without tilting your head sideways. It's recessed and the top 20% is blocked by the faceplate. It's annoying because you have to use the dial to set the cook time.

I didn't find the dial to be as impressive as it was to another reviewer. Sure, it's sturdy, about the diameter of a ping pong ball, but it's not as solid or large as the dials you might have found on good stereo systems of the 1980s.

It cooks well so far, and that's the most important thing.

 "Excellent Microwave" 2010-02-22
By Fieldman
Replaced a 23 year old Panasonic microwave that was still working (never repaired), but was getting tired. This unit was installed in a cabinet using the old trim (with a small alteration needed).

Sensor cooking feature is great. It takes the mystery out of how long or at what power to set the microwave. When timed cooking is used we had to modify our old times, as this one is much quicker. The inverter really works. Power levels are actually less on the lower settings not just on-off cycling.

The inside capacity on this microwave is much larger than our old one even though the outside width is the same. When a 9" x 13" casserole dish goes around without touching, you know you have a large cavity.

The outside is easy to maintain. Fingerprints don't show easily, but if they do a swipe with a damp cloth cleans them off.

An earlier review mentioned receiving a couple of shipments with a chip on the trim of the microwave. My microwave had a "nick" in the same position. Closer examination of the "nick" showed it to be a machined removal of the trim by the manufacturer that was supposed to be there.

I think Panasonic has built another excellent microwave.

"Amazing Speed and Power...Also Helps with Math!" 2010-02-10
By W. R. Russell Jr. (Gator Nation, FL USA)
I'm a retired bachelor and I don't 'cook' on the stove. With the quality of frozen and prepared meals these days, I don't have to. That means my microwave gets used three to four times a day or more for meals.

This microwave cooks evenly and REALLY, REALLY fast! I constantly have to figure out what 60 - 75% of the recommended times would be since it heats food faster than it's 1,250 watt rating would imply. Most recommended times assume an 1,100 watt microwave, so you'd think this would cook about 10% faster...no, it cooks anywhere from 25 - 40% faster. Great for me and my math! The turn knob makes time entry fast too.

It holds a lot and cleans up easy too.

The 'Sensor Reheat' function is fantastic if you have something that doesn't need stirring or checking...just punch the button and it cooks it to a tee...no math needed.

The programmed defrost settings are not accurate, but I hardly use them anyway, preferring the faster, full power and turn every couple of minutes method for frozen meats and poultry. It defrosts well this way.

I strongly recommend covering food, since a lot of energy is being applied very quickly and the 'explosions' can be dramatic! Small trade for this kind of convenience and capability.

Highly recommended.

 "Works Splendidly." 2009-11-08
By Gary Peterson (San Diego, California USA)
Our microwave oven recently gave out. What does one do? Get it repaired or get a new one? Well, it was a General Electric model and gave us five good years of service. But, it only cost 150 bucks new and a repair was likely to be costly, and we'd still end up with a 5-year-old microwave. We opted to go for a new one and purchased this Panasonic 1.6 cubic-foot model. It goes well with the decor of our kitchen and is actually larger, more powerful and less expensive than the old GE.

We use our microwave primarily for heating foods or drinks and cooking frozen food dishes. So far, it has worked splendidly. It's more powerful than the old one and quieter too. At present, we're very pleased with the purchase, but I think our total satisfaction will await long-term use. Will it be a reliable, trouble-free appliance? There's no real way to tell, but we've owned other Panasonic products and our satisfaction level has been very high. At the moment, I'd have to rate it five stars.

You don't even need to read the instruction manual. The oven prompts you with flashing lights next to each button, step by step. Have used it to defrost steaks etc for a barbeque and came out with NO cooked edges and perfectly defrosted meat. I love it! Just hope it holds up and gives us many years of service.

 "Under powered. Over priced" 2009-06-17

I bought this last Christmas as a treat for myself when my old cheapo microwave had died. I bought this based on the glowing reviews on this site. My plan was to use it to replace my dead microwave as well as to retire my cheap toaster oven I had had for a few years.

This oven is very big and *very* under powered. To give you an idea, tonight I cooked shake-n-bake pork chops. I doubled the cooking time on the box and the pork chops still came out pink / redish in the middle. They would not have been safe to eat after the recommended cooking time. Forget about cooking a small turkey or small roast.

This box is only slightly better as a microwave oven, though at least it's usable. It's slightly less powerful than my old 4-year-old $99 microwave that it replaced.

What a disappointment.
