"Can't Read the Digital Readout" 2010-01-16
By Steamboat (Pennsylvania)
The digital readout shorted out right after the warranty. Everything gets microwaved one minute at a time. Cannot see what time it is or know how much time is left until things are done. Sharp provided no assistance. The circuit board costs over $200 plus labor to fix. We have been "microwaving blind" ever since. Will not buy from them again.

"From Sharp Minds come Dangerous Products!" 2009-09-23
By Michael B. Kinder
Please note this review specifically relates to the R-2110JW model. However it may influence your decision making.

The Sharp "smart Carousel" design uses rotating magnetrons below the surface of the cooking chamber instead of rotating the food on a carousel. The rotating mechanism under the cooking chamber malfunctioned. As a result arcing occurred between the parts causing a fire and smoke. The unit was turned off in time to avoid a fire spreading to the surrounding cabinets. If no one had been present in the kitchen at the time a serious fire could have occurred.

The defect was bad enough. I consider myself lucky the damage was only to the microwave. Dealing with Sharp customer service was even worse. It has taken over two months to resolve this problem. Sharp offered me a replacement but couldn't get a new unit in white. We suggested paying the difference for an upgrade. We paid the difference for the upgrade...the sharp couldn't find it in white...even though I was able to locate a unit in white in about 5 minutes online. After giving up on a replacement and requesting a refund they "generously" offered me $183 for a product I paid $262. A product that endangered my home and family and had left me without a microwave for two months.

I've enjoyed Sharp products in the past but after this incident I can not recommend doing business with them under any circumstances.

There are not many choices for "over-the-counter" models out there, I wanted to see reviews of other models because I have to replace this Sharp model which is finicky at best! When it is working, the "Compu Cook" is so complicated I have to pull out the manual. But a more serious problem is that the microwave turns on all by itself, so we have to keep a bowl of water in it to avoid a major catastrophe, and occasionally the appliance blows a fuse, I noticed another reviewer had the same problem with the fuse as well.

By Tam (New York, NY United States)
We bought this product about 14 months ago and installed it in our newly renovated kitchen about 10 months ago. When the microwave works, it's a good microwave -- works well, good looking, nice automatic sensors -- however, we've had some problems with it.

The big problem for us (and this is a big problem) is that in the 10 months we've had it one of the three internal fuses shorted out on 3 different occasions. Now that it's out of it's 1-year warranty the price of fixing that fuse looks like its >$100. Also, this microwave is going to be tough to replace becasue we've built the cabinet opening custom for this microwave.

I'm also going to complain to my kitchen designer and make sure that this appliance isn't going to be recommended to his other customers. Unreliable quality makes for an expensive appliance.

"Very good, but not perfect" 2010-05-02
By M. Volk (Chicago, IL)
I bought the Panasonic microwave to replace a GE space saver microwave which died. Installation wasn't as easy as I would have hoped. For some reason, Panasonic located the cord near the front of the microwave, so I had to drill a new hole through the cabinet for it. Had I bought another GE microwave the existing hole would have worked. The other problem with having the cord where it is is it somewhat reduces the space in the cabinet.

It is a very good microwave. It is very powerful compared to my old microwave. The defrost mode is a little too powerful for its own good some of the time. It does an excellent job reheating food, the lower power levels work well.

This microwave also has a very powerful fan which works very well.

"Great microwave...kitchen timer is lacking" 2010-02-18
By D. Braga (Michigan)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/ROE8AWTULQDA8 I decided to film a short video describing this microwave rather than type out my full review.

Bottom line... I love the inverter magnetron which cooks at an even level of power rather than cycling 100% power. My only dislike is around the kitchen timer which doesn't keep beeping when it's done and won't allow you to use the microwave while it's counting.

Overall I do recommend this oven.

"Excellent microwave at an exceptional price, bracket needs work" 2010-02-09
By A. Stark (Cambridge, MA USA)
This is an excellent microwave at an exceptionally good price, as other reviews have said.

I'd like to relate my experience installing it. I had a 17 year old Panasonic above-the-range microwave, and it stopped working after years of reliable service. So I thought I would replace it with a new Panasonic microwave, in the hopes that the installation would be straightforward. This was mostly the case. The mounting bracket was different, and the mounting holes in the cabinet above were different, but the exhaust fan ducting and electical outlet were exactly the same. So all I had to do was unscrew the old bracket and drill a few new mounting holes. This worked great. The mounting bracket on the new microwave is inferior to the old in its construction. The old microwave slid in and out easily on its fairly robust mounting bracket, but the new bracket got jammed inside the unit several times during the "lift microwave and slide it onto the brackets" phase. It really got jammed and required considerable jiggling and force to get it to "slide on". The Panasonic engineers really ought to do a redesign of the bracket. What I recommend for purchasers is that they try sliding the bracket in and out of the back of the microwave several times, before the bracket is mounted on the wall. Bend it a little to make sure it slides easily. Eventually I got it onto the bracket, and all is well. I'm very happy with it.

This microwave works well. If it lasts 10 years like our GE spacemaker - then I would say it is a great buy. The quality and engineering is excellent.

Pros: 1) Closing and opening the door doesn't make nearly as much noise as the GE 2) Quieter operation when cooking 3) The range light can be dimmed (nice night light) 4) Defrosts more evenl5) 2.0 cu feet is nice when you need it 6) Intuitive operation -just turn the knob to necessary time & press start.

Cons: None

"GREAT microwave. A must have for any novice chef/foodie !" 2009-10-23
By Jon (Maryland)

Install: Item is actually alot lighter than i had thought. Im a average size guy - 6'2 228lbs.. and picked up/mounted it no problem. The directions were clear, and precise. While i do appreciate the template, it was obsolete as im fairly sure my house was NOT built to code.. OF COURSE. i had to get creative with mounting it.

If you use the template instructions, its easy.. but even if you cant - as long as you understand the general idea of "mounting heavy item needs screws into studs" you should be fine. After i mounted the bracket, i cut the exsisting wires that went to the previous fan/light and then connected my own wire set. I fished that up thru a hole i bored in the back of the cabinet and pulled it thru to the cabinet above the stove. Wired it up to a box/socket, placed micro on bracket, lead power cord up to socket and BAMO! we have a mounted, powered microwave.

Looks: Beautiful. It wasnt even mounted when friends had said it was a very nice looking unit. (hey - we are remodeling our kitch on a budget.. )

Functions: I am blown away. the description on line was an understatement. TURBO FAN???? light, and NIGHT LIGHT DIMMER, and i absolutely LOVE the dial. u want a to control the minutes - no problem.. u wanna kick it up and jump ahead to advance minutes or pounds? just spin the dial faster and it will pull it up. VERY easy and i love the push button idea of it. u dont want the dial sticking out - push it in and it will hide away.

Other functions and space: wow- it came with a slide in rack??? i can microwave a whole boat load of stuff. I could literally stick 2 of our old microwaves inside the cooking area of this bad boy..

Inverter turbo defrost: just that.. i mean the first time i saw this in action was at a friends house. 1lb of meat perfectly defrosted in about 3 minutes??? wow.. AND i LOVEEEE that when meat is half way done defrosting, it will BEEP to notify u that u need to flip it over.

Sound: not too bad at all. alot quieter than our other microwave.. the turbo speed fan is kinda loud, but if u need to evacuate smoke from the area - its your best friend.

Display: easy to read, bright.

There were no reviews when i had purchased this item.. i knew it was coming because i had called Panasonic and asked why they sold similar items in canada but not US.. the rep just stated "next month we will have a series coming out that will be incredible. if you can wait, we d make sure you enjoy the micro".

Also - what i had learned is microwaves cook at 75% power some of the time, and than switches to a significantly lower power rating.. this micro goes at 60%, 100% of the time.

Its just incredible!

Value: fantastic. go out and find a microwave that has as many features, that is over the range, and a rack, and everything else and tell me the price. u WILL NOT FIND IT NEAR THIS PRICE. GO BUY THIS UNIT!!!!

 "Makes awesome baked potatoes" 2009-09-09
By anonymous
Why just 3 stars?

The start and stop buttons are inconveniently placed in the center of all the various sensor cook function buttons. I hurriedly tried to stop the oven once, and pushed the night light button instead, and was momentarily blinded.

As already mentioned, the night light is so bright and glaring, that it does nothing to help see the sensor function buttons better. The interior light is rather dim too, so opening the door didn't provide much illumination. Heck, these function buttons are hard for me to read even with my glasses on.

The sensor defrost cooked the outer edges of my block of frozen ground beef after only 1.5 minutes. I decided to defrost manually, with the power level set on 20%.

The sensor cook setting for frozen entrees overcooked my TV dinner.

So, what's there to like? The three baked potatoes I made came out perfect, and all I did was push the baked potato sensor cook button.

"Not Good, Not at All." 2009-01-14
By Richard S. Smith (Los Angeles, CA United States)
I agree with the other people who say Sharp has lost its sense of what "Quality Control" means. I bought a Sharp R-520KS to make my kitchen complete since I was remodeling. I thought a counter-top unit would be a better choice than a built-in model. I also have an early 90's Sharp Carousel that still works without flaw. So when I unpacked this unit I was pretty jazzed. Unfortunately it wouldn't start. Although the door seemed to close all the way, it was not latching properly and there was nothing I could do but return the unit or call for service. I decided to return the unit and call my kitchen contractor back so he could build an enclosure for a more expensive GE range-top unit. I'm also very disappointed in Consumer Reports, they gave good ratings to this model. Something's just not right these days. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like all the sub $300 microwaves have QC issues.

 "Poor Quality Control" 2008-12-24
By William Karschnik (Round Rock, TX)
We have had a Sharp microwave oven like this, for almost 10 years. It still works but it needs a little persuasion to get it to run. We decided to get a new one for Christmas. The oven works great! BUT, after a week we noticed that the inside finish is cracking and peeling. We had to go back to using the old one.

Amazon will replace the oven or refund the purchase price, and even pay for the return shipping. Very good customer service from Amazon.

"Great Features, Including Planned Obsolesence" 2010-02-07

We have bought two of these. I love the features and it works well, but both of the ones we bought died within about 3-4 years. They both went the same way. We turned them on one day and saw flashes of light inside the microwave and heard popping sounds followed by that burned electrical smell. At least they're consistent.

 "Same as Dacor" 2009-05-07
By Nevin Cavero II (Grass Valley, Ca.)
Our Dacor microwave of 9 years had rusted out inside on the back wall. Since the unit was a built in, the only microwave that would fit was the same model from Dacor. In checking on replacing the Dacor I found the least expensive price to be $535.00 before shipping. During a chance conversation with an appliance repair person, he told me that Sharp manufactured the Dacor and might be cheaper! I check the Sharp models and found the R-530ES to be identicle to the Dacor with different badging.

We purchased the Sharp R-530ES for only $306.00 delivered.

The Sharp mirowave performs identicle to the Dacor. We are extremely pleased with the unit. It actually has more features than are old Dacor.

 "nice microwave" 2009-05-03

I'm a fan of Sharp microwaves. This is my third one. I got my first in 1988, it lasted until 1999. I got my second in 1999 and it lasted until 2009. I expect my next microwave review to take place in 2019.

This microwave has plenty of power to heat quickly, yet the sensor reheat function is fantastic. Put in a plate or a bowl, hit sensor reheat and voila! perfectly heated food. I didn't expect this feature to work so well, but i find i use it all the time. Aside from that, it's easy to clean and pretty quiet. I'm not a fan of handles on microwaves so I'll recommend it as easy to clean as well.

"Same failure of product twice; stay away" 2008-04-28
By Jaker (Los Angeles, CA)
We bought this unit when we redid our kitchen in 2002. After a few years, the metal piece inside on the right side seemed to wear away and the oven caught fire. We replaced the unit with an identical unit bought on Amazon (no criticism of them). After about two years, the new unit had the exact same problem: the unit seemed to wear away in the same spot and caught fire. In both cases, there are smoke marks in the same spot, on the inside right near a metal panel.

I am of the opinion that this unit is not safe and seems to have a design or manufacturing defect. Also, the second unit we bought was noisier and seemed to have some sort of mechanical problem, based on the noise it made when in use. If i can find another unit to fit the built in space and trim kit, i will buy that over the Sharp unit. I will also be trying to contact Sharp to see if they have any response to this problem. I will report in if i do hear anything from them.

 "Cooking Made Easy" 2010-03-02
By gail powers (Harbor County, MI and N. Naples, FL)
Initially I bought my first convection microwave because I had a less than wonderful built-in oven which had cold spots and hot spots. Nothing ever seemed to turn out right and I figured a combo unit would be a good work around. Almost immediately, I realized the convection feature was the greatest thing since the wheel. The results were so good that I stopped using my conventional oven entirely. Since then I have bought two other combo units. I've had this model since 2008.

While my old built-in conventional oven has been replaced with an oven that has a convection feature and I use it when I am making large meals and love it, this is the oven I use daily.

It is large so I can make most daily meals in it. Convection ovens use forced air to cook evenly. Foods cooked by convection tend to not dry out. Whether roasting meat or baking a cake, the results are uniformly good. The same can be said of the broiling feature which makes clean-up a snap.

I use the microwave to warm leftovers, cook bacon, melt butter, defrost meat, steam vegetables and do anything else that can be satisfactorily done via microwave.

The smart cook feature is totally wicked. All you have to do is hit a button indicating what type of food you want to cook and the oven cooks it and shuts down automatically. A previous reviewer raved about how it does frozen hot dogs.....so true. It works great on sausage links and frozen pizzas, too.

Clean-up is equally easy. Wet wipes,a damp paper towel, or a towel dipped in diluted DAWN will get the job done with minimal effort. I clean the oven's stainless exterior with stainless polish.

Years ago combo units were plentiful. Most manufacturers produced them. There are fewer models like these made today. I was extremely happy to find out that Sharp still made a combo unit. It's the best one I've owned because it has a lot of easy cooking features and is well made.

 "A Dud" 2010-02-28
By Eleanor Siegel (New York City)
I have this microwave for 2 1/2 years and the turntable is indeed a dud and has stopped working properly on convection and microwave mix, which is the feature I purchased this microwave to use. Besides that, Sharp has been unhelpful and difficult to reach.

 "Sharp R-930 Convection Microwave Combo Counter-top" 2010-02-06

I researched these types of products extensively before settling on this one. All the GREAT reviews you come across are TRUE. It's a great all-in-one convection microwave. A bit "pricey" but you get what you pay for:-)

"No surprise... I love it!" 2009-09-24
By Susan Goodwin
When my previous Sharp convection microwave finally quit working I wanted to replace it with the same thing. My old unit had a date of manufacture on it... June 1988. This product is just like my old one except it is slightly higher wattage. And, amazingly, this one was slightly less expensive than the one I bought more than 20 years ago. I never would have replaced my old unit just to get a more modern look, but that is another benefit. The old one was black with a phony wood look. I love the look of my new all white model!

 "Sharp R-930AK 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 900-Watt Convection Microwave, Black" 2009-09-14
By Paul A. Webb
The Sharp R-930AK 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 900-Watt Convection Microwave, Black is the best convection microwave oven on the market. I had been using my previous VERY similar model for about 15 years everyday for all of my major cooking. It did baking, roasting, and broiling excellently. I did roasting chickens up to 7.5 pounds and turkeys up to 15 pounds, steaks, beef roasts, hamburgers, pork, fish, cassaroles, everything. It was my main everyday cooking utensil. That is why, when it came time to replace the old one, I bought another Sharp model that is almost identical to the old one I had. It is the most reliable cooking appliance I have ever used. Althought I have a conventional oven, I hardly use it. I use the Sharp R-930AK 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 900-Watt Convection Microwave instead. It also saves me a bundle on electricity over my conventional electric stove and oven.

I bought it from evVive Home on Amazon.com, but when I do a search for it on Amazon now, it comes up with a different company. I was very happy with evVive Home.
