I got this rice cooker for free and I was glad to have it after my traditional rice cooker broke. It is basically just a plastic bowl with a strainer and a lid with a vent that can be opened and closed. The quality seems fine to me as I have used it several times and nothing has broken. I find that I always need to add more water and add time to recommendations in the instructions, but once you figure out what works in your microwave its not too hard to adjust accordingly. With that being said, I still think a traditional rice cooker is a better option for cooking rice as there is less room for errors and you can microwave other things (like vegetables) while your rice is cooking. The Nordic Ware rice cooker; however, is cheaper than any traditional rice cooker I've seen and is also great for heating up frozen veggies as you can put the veggies in the strainer. That setup will keep everything moist and allows you to easily remove the unwanted hot water.

Excellent product for cooking rice and veggies, cooks perfect rice each time. Very happy with the purchase. Just put in the rice, 1.5 times water and microwave for 11-12 minutes and the rice is ready - easy and fast. Cooks for up to 3-4 people.

The cover would not fit on securely so it was useless. I returned it and sorry I ever bought it.

Rinse 3 cups of rice in the basket with cold tap water; pour the rinsed rice in the bucket; pour 4 and ½ cups of distilled or purified water in the bucket , pour 1 tablespoon of salt or less and stir; cook 40 minutes at 50 percent power in a little 900 watt microwave oven; after cooking turn the top to close the holes and leave for 5 minutes. Fork the rice to fluff it all out on a plate, and witness the prettiest, fluffiest, most delicious rice you have ever eaten. In fact, try it like you are eating popcorn. The rice is not gummy. The rice is not sticky. The is so delicious that it gives the delicious feeling as though you are eating meat! This is healthy eating with the ENJOYMENT!

I wanted a simple way to make long grain brown basmati rice in the evenings after work and this has worked out well for me. Despite comments made in some other reviews, I have never had a plastic smell or taste. It took some experimentation to get the brown rice to come out like I wanted it, soft but not sticky with every grain seperate. Here's my formula:
- Use 3 to 3.5 cups of water per cup of rice.
- Rinse before cooking to remove starch and prevent boil-over.
- Bring water to a boil for about 10 minutes on full power uncovered.
- Reduce power to 60% and simmer uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Fluff rice and let sit covered for 5 minutes.
This is almost an hour but still quicker and takes less attention than my old method of pre-soaking and cooking on the stove top. If you are in hurry or just prefer it, it also makes good white rice.
