"Avoid All GE Home Appliances including this one" 2010-02-22
By William A. Adams (Bainbridge Island, WA USA)
My GE XL1800 came with the homebuilder's "package price" and could not be substituted. It is abominable, as are all GE home appliances, from ranges to coffee pots. The main problems are reliability, and user interface. This microwave is one of the worst, and I have had other GE microwaves. They are hard to avoid since they dominate the market. The most annoying thing is the presumptive and cryptic button panels and the zombie-brain-dead displays. I have never yet figured out how to defrost a 2 lb block of cheese or how to cancel the timer after it has once been started. As for convection cooking -- forget about it. Every time I heat up a cup of coffe and the damn thing beeps at me 4 or six times, while blinking "Your Food Is Ready," I feel like putting my fist throught the door panel. GE may be the low cost provider, but there is a reason for that: their stuff is designed by idiots. There are many better choices.

 "Headed for the dumpster" 2008-04-17
By Debra Small (Much too far from Graceland)
I agree wholeheartedly with the other review. An odd noise in 2007 and then the turntable stopped turning. And there's only one here with most meals eaten out. Now, another noise that goes with what I don't know. Never again.

 "Didn't last" 2008-04-12
By Baby K (Baltimore, MD)
We bought this model less than 3 years ago. It worked wonderfully and I'll have a very hard time finding one I like more, but it stopped heating food altogether, started making scary noises and we saw sparks... the manufacturer's warranty only provides a new magnetron tube but I have to pay for labor & related parts. I don't really want their new tube if it's only going to last 3 years, so I'm shopping again!

"Seems like it was constructed to fail on or about expiration of guarantee" 2010-02-26
By Andrea (Cincinnati, OH)
Beware. I bought this over the range microwave in March of 2009, and it stopped working completely yesterday (Feb 25 2010). I use it once or twice per day. Normal stuff like TV dinners. It looks very nice, but it was NOT built to last. I bought it online and I'm hunting through my archived e-mails trying to find my receipt so that I can get it serviced (preferably REPLACED). Earliest appointment is in a week, so I am without a microwave for at least a week.

"too loud and too many beeps" 2010-02-26
By A. Walas (Moline, IL)
This microwave was a good price but it wakes people up with the loud operation and multiple beeps. Door also does not seem solid and is very loud if you are not holding it tight when you open and close. Was not worth the price considering all the noise.

By C. Keane (Maryland)
This unit was a replacement for a slightly earlier model that failed. It is nice that the LG over-the-range family generally uses the same wall-mount, so installation was easy as a replacement. It works fine, though if you are a heavy users of microwaves, I am not sure what the real durability is, but since we are light users, the prior model lasted several years, and expect this will too.

"Great Microwave...a little loud, though" 2010-01-26
By Wayne Topp
This microwave is awesome! I love how easy it was to install and how easy it is to use! The only problem with this (and it really isn't a problem, just something to get used to) is that it runs louder than most microwaves I've every heard. That being said, my kids both sleep fairly close to the kitchen and it hasn't woken them up yet (and they can be pretty light sleepers). I would definitely recommend this microwave to anyone, but if a loud microwave would just annoy you, don't get this one.

     "Stay away from Maytag" 2007-07-19
By Gary W. Williams (Chiefland, FL USA)
This microwave was supplied with our new house and never worked from day one. Maytag sent a repairman out to fix the unit but a part had to be ordered. That was 5 weeks ago and Maytag told me today that it will be 6 more weeks before the part is available. The reason they gave was the recent earthquakes in China. Wouldn't you think they could be more inventive than that excuse? Bottom line is Maytag told me the unit has a repair only warranty and they will not replace it. I am amazed at Maytag's flippant attitude about me as a customer. The Maytag refrigerator had to be repaired as well.

I have this microwave which came with my new home that I purchased 3 years ago. I live by myself and therefore this microwave just gets minimal use. I am on this website to look for a NEW microwave because this one has already stopped working. I can't believe that a microwave would only last 3 years. All of a sudden it just stopped cooking. Everything else still works but it will not get hot. I have read on other sites where other people have had the same problem with this model. I DEFINITELY DO NOT recommend this microwave.

Save yourself a lot of time and frustration and look elsewhere for a quality product. I have had to have the repair guy come out 6 times in the first year (knock on wood, the first year is not finished yet). Of course, each appointment wastes an entire day, because I'm held hostage waiting for the doofus to show up. Maytag just does not make quality products anymore. It shouldn't break in the first place and the service is horrible.

"The best micro convection around!" 2009-07-12
    By S. Romo (Vancouver, WA)
I have owned 2 microwave convection Sharp Carousel's. One on the counter and one over the range. Both have lasted an extremely long period of time without any problems and were easy to clean. I believe my mom is on her 3rd in 25 years! I recently own a Kenmore Elite micro convection hood and 1) it will never heat to 450, 2) it takes a half hour to heat to 350 and 3) it died after 3 years!!! I recommend this to anyone looking! LOVE IT.

"This is my second one of these" 2009-01-12
    By L. Straight (Southern California)
We bought the first one of these almost 4 years ago when we remodeled the kitchen. It has performed flawlessly as a microwave and convection oven. We did not use it as an over-range exhaust fan in that first installation.

I just ordered the second one for use above a small cooktop range in a small kitchen in a "mother-in-law" suite we're building for extended visits by family. I'm expecting the same fine performance.

     "Problem with filters" 2008-12-29
    By Joan D. Mcclaran
I have been unable to find filters that fit this microwave. I ordered some through Sharp and they didn't fit. Sharp told me that I would have to get a service man out to install them. The service man could not install them and he called Sharp and was told that there was a design error and there were no filters available for this model. Sharp would not reimburse me for the expense of the service call. Otherwise, it is a great microwave/convection oven.

"Great microwave and convectional oven" 2008-10-13
By Michael Entin (Seattle, WA USA)
I've selected this model, because it is the only convectional microwave oven that fits my kitchen. Other models require some extra space in front of the microwave on the left side, to be able to open the door. It is not a problem for most kitchens, but if you have a deep cabinet to the left of the microwave that extends in front of oven, Sharp seems like the only option. Sharp has put a smaller door that starts about an inch from the left side of the microwave, so it opens freely.

So far I was not disappointed. I'm mostly using the microwave mode, convectional mode. It cooks well, and the menu is rather intiutive - what else do you need? Auto reheat works well and produces consistently good results. I was not getting very good result with mixed mode (oven + microwave) though.

There are some faults in this model, that I think Sharp should've done better, so it only got 4 starts:

    1) The menu system could be better. E.g. the Start button on most microwaves also serves as 'Add minute' or 'Add 30sec', but here it would not do anything - one has to use dedicated 'Add minute' button. I got used to it, but my guests can't easily find this button.

    2) The fan is very very loud. It has two speeds, but even with reduced speed, it is very loud. It does not look extremely powerful either.

    3) The range light is generated by two small incandescent bulbs. I would expect energy efficient fluorescent lamps or LEDs for this high-end oven. They could've perfectly fit a long tube there, but have instead put old unefficient incandescent bulbs.

    4) The interior is stainless steeel, but it is not very smooth, so it takes some effort to clean the microwave.

"Beware the Bummer Oven " 2008-10-12
    By Spinner (New York, NY)
I had to buy this model microwave because my kitchen built-ins were constructed to fit an earlier Sharp model in this line. I loved the old one, even though it only lasted 9 years, but this one has been a tremendous disappointment.

First off, Amazon does not tell you until AFTER your purchase that they subcontract out delivery to a third party who prohibits you from speaking with the driver via his cellphone and thinks nothing of dropping the ball re customer communication: I wasted an entire day waiting for a delivery man who did not ring my bell as instructed and had instead delivered it to my super, which no one bothered to tell me. The delivery was an extremely frustrating fiasco. Amazon needs to take more responsibility vis a vis decent delivery services.

Next point of disappointment: I paid two men to install this monster. (It's practically 80 lbs. and impossible to install solo). So they get it in and fitting properly into the drop-in shelf designed to hold it. Then comes another surprise: Every time I turn it on, it makes a tremendous rattley racket not unlike a jet turbine - nothing at all like the smooth, quiet operation of its predecessor. This noise is so loud you can't even think about listening to NPR or a fellow kitchen occupant during the oven's operation. If I press firmly on the door of the microwave while it's on, the noise mutes, but who can stand in front of the microwave pressing on it every time you zap a potato? I'm not sure if the ace delivery company rattled something loose inside this particular appliance, or if this series model contains a design flaw, but the noise is really horrible.

There's more: I was very impressed with the ease of baking in this oven - the programming is simple enough for a liberal arts major to grasp quite easily. But every time I use the convection function (closely following all the instructions re appropriate containers, elevating the foodstuffs off the rotating plate, etc.,) the oven gives off a menacing odor exactly like you sniff in a terrible electrical fire. There is nothing in the manual concerning either the noise issue or the smell issue.

I'm in NYC, where there are very few options when searching for a specific appliance (I tried to find one locally that would fit my shelf space), but if I could have, I would have previewed this model at a local retailer and seen how it worked there before springing for such an expensive lemon. Because this behemouth is such a hassle to remove and install, it's the kind of thing which, if you do buy it, you should buy with a guarantee of local on-site service. So far, this oven's cost me $1,000.
