I just purchased this Sharp convection microwave. I am slowly reading the manual and cooking a variety of foods in an attempt to learn the features and maximize my use of this. I cannot begin to explain how WOW'd my husband and I are. I made some Cream of Wheat in it for breakfast. No boil-over like we had with every previous microwave. TV dinners--I love that I can program a series of cooking instructions (like 5 min at 100% power followed by 4 1/2 min at 50% power), and my husband raved at no burnt edges, no dried out areas; it was just evenly and nicely cooked without the usual microwave problems. lol, my husband is sitting behind me and spontaneously said, 'Gosh darn, I sure love that microwave! We can do all kinds of things in it...I can't wait to try a pizza.!'
Why 'with my fingers crossed?' I am leery that what some others report about problems will be not true. I hope I can get 18 - 24 months out of my new microwave, but only time will tell.

First off, if your complaint and reason for a low rating on this product is popcorn cooking performance, you didn't follow directions in the manual that clearly state the need to place popcorn bag on an inverted pie dish or suitable substitute. Microwave popcorn bags have a material in the bottom of the bag that heats up when microwaved (like those so-called crust browning disks for frozen pizza) helping the kernals heat up enough to pop. The metal turntable reflects microwave energy and doesn't work well with the bag heating strip when placed directly on the metal table. If microwave popcorn is your main concern go for a $50 cheapo microwave.
Others complain about only 900 watts. I find it more than enough. I sometimes program in lower power to purposely slow down the microwave cooking. We have an 1100 watt oven at work and I don't like that it cooks so fast. boiling/burning the edges and melting my container while the inside of the food hasn't had time to even warm up yet.
I bought this about a month and a half ago and couldn't be happier. Cooks a wide variety of foods and dishes to perfection. I've only tried a few so far but everything has come out great.
Salmon fillets on the wire rack- tender and most, not dried out.
Frozen Sweet potato fries- Compubake french fry setting makes them perfectly every time, crisp and slightly brown on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside. Regular frozen fries turn out equally well.
CompuPizza cooked the crust of 79 cent frozen pizza so perfectly that it was hard to believe that it was a cheapo frozen pizza.
Frozen hamburger patties- equally impressive, better than I can do on the bbq grill.
Bacon- I place the bacon on the wire rack and cover with a paper towel then microwave for about 5 minutes. Works well and pretty easy cleanup.
Yeast bread- Baked up like a champ using compubake.
Toast- Probably not it's strongest point, but I remove the turntable and place the rack directly in the oven (seems to be designed to fit the bottom of oven, but no mention of it in the manual), then use grill with upper and lower elements. It'll turn out decently browned toast in about 5 minutes without pre-heating. Works for bagels too.
Clean up is a breeze- Nothing sticks to the teflon turn table. It wipes clean with cloth/sponge or it's washable in the sink. The interior is stainless steel on all sides and also wipes clean easily with a damp cloth. I've spattered quite a bit around the edges and still looks brand new since I wipe it after each use. The bottom grill element swivels up out of the way to easily clean the bottom surface and the top grill element is recessed behind a protective perforated grill.
I've also owned a Kenmore convection microwave that's about the same size as this one. It worked pretty good but not nearly as well as this Sharp. It was convection/microwave only without the grill elements so it took longer to heat up and didn't put the nice brown on things that this oven does. Of if it did it would take a long time. Overall just not nearly as handy as this oven. Also, the stainless interior of that oven didn't seem to wipe clean as easy as this one. Time will tell if I'm wrong about that.
I only hope the reliability holds up on this, as some have complained of failures after only a year or so of use.
This is more than a space saving all in one appliance. It will turn out dishes better than you could have produced in your regular oven, grill, or microwave.
Almost forgot to mention free super saver shipping all the way to Hawaii can't be beat. It was delivered about four days after ordering.

I bought this product on August 3, 2008 from Amazon. The microwave stopped working on 1/31/2010. We chose this Microwave Oven to replace a Sharp Carousel purchased in 1983 - it lasted 25 years! I am very unhappy with the lifespan of the Sharp R-820BW. I rated it 3 Stars as the various functions of this unit met expectations - if it had lasted longer I would rate it 5 stars. KM Boise

I bought this oven over 3 years ago (R-820B) model. Yes, its bigger than a microwave, and yes it has a bulk of metal in the back but it's an oven to cook in, not just a microwave to reheat in. I have it on the counter in a corner so it fits adequately. I'm energy conscious and try to keep my electric bill to a minimum so I don't like to use my conventional oven very much. For 3 years I've enjoyed roasting a chicken almost weekly in this, and also the usual microwave foods like baked potatoes, etc. (The microwave above the stove that came with the house when I bought it last year is now used for paperwork. Very handy!) The chicken is always moist and beautifully browned. During this past winter I felt like trying a burger in it because it was too cold to grill outside. I didn't have to read the manual because there are auto grill settings that require nothing more than hitting the buttons it tells you to. I was shocked at how beautifully grilled and sizzling it turned out. So I got the manual out and read the directions for all the other auto settings. Then I tried a steak.... then I tried some lamb chops (yum) that I bought on sale. WOW! Delicious! nice and pink in the middle, perfectly browned on the outside, and tender! Defrosting was a surprise when I stopped using the old microwave solution - a lowered power level (which almost always partially cooked the outside of the food). Well the "compu-defrost" setting was amazing - defrosted the meat without cooking it one bit, no matter how thin or thick the steaks were! I did check them periodically and took them out a little before the time was up. I like to bake bread so that's my next project. I'm so in love with this oven that if I were building a new house I would design a kitchen around it! Today I ordered a cookbook especially for this oven so I'm hoping that very soon my conventional oven will become a new filing cabinet! I live alone but often have guests for dinner so a regular oven is a waste of energy for me. I've never had a bit of trouble with it and have moved it through 2 states. I think the person who had the smoke problem probably hit the timer too many times so instead of 3 minutes it was going on 30 minutes. (I've done this myself). I absolutely recommend this oven - just be sure you know the measurements and have space for it's depth.

Bought this to replace a standard microwave in my semi truck. So far i have mastered the standard frozen pizza and the self rising crust. Have done a few casseroles That turned out good. For an all around oven/Microwave this thing is what I needed.
A friend of mine has the same unit in his Semi also without any problems..
